Fall is definitely in the air as October rolls in. The month of October is full of fun activities and a change of schedule, so please make sure you read the whole e-mail. Don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram @erikasdancestudio for weekly updates about what’s going on at the studio!
Halloween Holiday
With Halloween falling on a Monday this year, we have decided to cancel all classes on Monday, October 31st. All Monday dancers tuition will be prorated.
Tuition
Reminder that tuition is due before October10th. After this date, a $10 late fee will be added to your tuition. Cash, check, credit card, Paypal to erikasdancestudio@gmail.com or Venmo @erikajfox are accepted. If your dancer comes on a Monday this month, please take $10 off their tuition.
Drop Off/Pick Up
As you are dropping your dancer off to class, please be mindful of our location. Where we are in a neighborhood, we ask you to please drive into the area very slowly. We still have children playing outside and would hate to have an accident. Safety is our number one priority, so please, help us keep our neighborhood safe!
Fall Break
EDS will be closed the week of October 20th-24th for Fall Break. Enjoy your break!
Halloween Parties
Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. We always like to celebrate this fun holiday at EDS! Each dancer will have her Halloween party in her class the week of October 17th (Monday classes only because of Fall Break) and 25th-28th. Make sure you send your dancer all dressed up and with a trick or treat bag to her party. We are looking for 2 parents in each class who would be willing to help with your dancers party the last 20 minutes of her class. Please let me know if you would be interested in helping with your child’s party as soon as possible!
9-10 Year Olds Party: October 27th
Beginning Drill Party: October 26th
Advanced Drill Party: October 27th
Parent Watch Week
Normally, Parent Watch Week is the last full week of the month, but with the Halloween parties and Fall Break happening back to back, there will be no official Parent Watch Week this month. If you would like to pop in one day at the end of class, please do so!

I, Erika, will be out of the country October 21-October 28th. I have substitutes covering all of my classes but if there is an emergency or you need to get ahold of someone at the studio, please contact Caitlin Thomas at 1-385-219-1380.
We had a great first month of classes and are excited to continue on in our dance year. We have such a fun group of dancers this year, we consider ourselves lucky! Thank you for all of your support this past month!

We have all heard this statement before right? As a first time mom, I am obsessed with Parent Magazine. As I was flipping through the August issue, I came across an article that captured my attention. It seems like I have at least one parent every year call me halfway through the year wondering what to do about her dancer who is wanting to quit for one reason or another. There is such a fine line between pushing your child and giving in to your child. Where exactly is that line? How do you know when it’s okay to let your child drop an activity? Or when is it best to make her stick it out? I hope I can give you a couple ideas to help get you through those rough days where your dancers leotard is covered in chocolate, her ballet bun isn’t quite right, and she is crying all the way to the studio… Ugh heaven help us mothers and all dance studios in Lehi, UT.

A Little Nervous or Deeply Anxious?

“Some kids resist new activities or challenges because they don’t naturally enjoy going out of their comfort zone, as opposed to kids who like to rise to a challenge,” says pediatrician Ari Brown, M.D. If your child isn’t naturally a risk taker, it may be a good idea to push a little bit to help them out. On the other hand, if your child will not even walk near a swimming pool, he or she probably isn’t quite ready for swimming lessons.

Try getting to the bottom of their resistance. “Kids can have an anxiety that is not based on the truth of the situation,”says Dr Berman. “Sometimes just letting them know the reality can really help.”

Don’t Bribe, But Try To Make The Activity Fun

I’m sure bribing has worked like a charm for some parents, but for the rest of us, not so much! You don’t want to get your child in the habit of saying “What will you give me?” every time you want her to do something. You could try having her practice her plies in the kitchen while you are cooking dinner. Heck you do them too as you are stirring your spaghetti! Let her be the teacher. Another fun activity could be you videoing her, and allowing her to watch herself or send it to a family member to watch. Does your child have a goal? When I was in junior high, I will never forget watching the Lehi Drill Team perform at halftime. I told myself I wanted to be one of those dancers. My mom then put me in a Drill Team Prep Class and I was able to make the Lehi Drill Team a few years later.

Question Your Motives

Just because your daughter is coordinated and flexible doesn’t mean she will love dance class. Not every girl is going to love twirling around the dance floor singing the Frozen Soundtrack. Yes, we want our kids to stay active but there are plenty of other non contact or contact sports that your little princess could love.

Think about whose passion this really is. I already find myself imagining my little Ava, who is only 3 months old, spinning around the dance room doing pirouettes and leaps. I have to remind myself all the time that it will be okay if Ava hates dance, because really her happiness is what makes me happy too.

Look For Red Flags

Does your child consistently steer clear of the ball and the other players? Has she ever faked an injury? Is she resistant to practicing on her own, or does she complain constantly when she’s reminded to practice? Can you get through a discussion about the activity without it leading to whining or some kind of conflict? And most importantly, does the activity seem to build your child’s self-confidence- or does it tear it down?

Let Your Child Be Heard

Forcing doesn’t feel so much like force when there are choices embedded within the activity. “Include your child in the process,” Dr. Berman says. “Your goal is to help him find something he will love.” Think of it all as a journey to give your child experience and understanding in different areas on the way to finding her passions.

One Thing You Should Force

Physical Activity – It doesn’t need to be an organized sport, and it should never be brought up with words like fat, thin, overweight, or out of shape. Use words like “healthy” and “strong” to provide motivation. A family walk after dinner, hide-and-seek, or a bike ride are great ways to get your kids moving. Remember, kids are almost always motivated when parents participate, so get out there with them and move!

Hello Everyone! It has been a while since I have written on our blog so I thought I would take the time and get everyone caught up on our lives here at EDS.

For those of you who may have tried to contact me over the past 6 weeks, I have been on maternity leave. My husband and I welcomed our sweet baby girl, Ava, on April 21st. She was 6 lbs 4 oz and 18 in long.

If you still have any questions or concerns, please contact me again now that we are back into the swing of things.

Summer Classes – EDS most likely will not be offering Summer Classes this year. My parents sold their home and so we are studio-less for the next month. I am currently building a home in Lehi where EDS will reside but it will not be finished until July. If anything changes, we will let you know!

New Location – We are so excited to announce the new home of EDS! The address is 1727 W 550 N in Lehi, by Willowcreek Jr. High. Our new location is only 5 minutes away from our old one so we are still in the same neck of the woods. Classes will start at our new location in the Fall!

New Schedule Please bear with us as we accommodate a new schedule for the 2014-2015 dance season. At our new location, we have 2 dance rooms available for use at all times. We are in the process of switching up classes, days, and times. The new schedule should be posted by July.

Thank you everyone for your cooperation over the past 6 weeks. We are so excited for our Fall 2014-2015 dance season in our new location! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding next year.

Have A Great Summer!
