With the recital just around the corner I thought this topic would be great for a blog post. After paying tuition for nine months, driving to dance each week, and costume fees, it’s time to stick your dancers on stage! For some, this is no big deal, for all the rest of us, this is slightly frightening and can become a fight with little ones. With only two weeks left, now is a great time to start using some of the techniques in this article so your dancer will feel comfortable performing on stage!

A couple weeks ago I posted about the positions of the feet. Even if the feet are turned out and pointed, if a dancer’s arms are limp and boring – nothing matters. Click Here! Being a beautiful dancer is a combination of just about everything; poise, confidence, technique, and passion. By developing the technique of a dancer you develop poise, confidence and most importantly passion.

Growing up in the dancing world,  I remember trying to be someone I wasn’t. Somehow, once I entered high school I decided I was going to be me. I was going to embrace the technique I had learned and that was when I developed the passion I was looking for.

I know at times it’s hard to get your daughters to come to class without tears or a fight, because I used to be that girl. In the end, I was grateful for all those dance classes my mom shoved me in while I was throwing a tantrum. During all the crying, I learned technique. Once I had the technique, I developed the passion. It’s a continual process. Don’t give up on something that can potentially give your daughter her best friends, a talent, and possible a career (Example: Me). Help your dancers develop that passion, the passion that helps them decide who they are.

Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.

As I was doing some research this morning, I came across a great article. In class each week, we are always emphasizing the constant positions of the dancers feet at any age. I understand that hearing ballet terminology can sometimes scare parents away, but this is a short, simple, and easy to understand way to help your daughter’s practice at home.(You may even learn something yourself 🙂 Click Here!

For my Final in my Adolescent Development class I need to do a project based on the intellectual and physical development of children and adolescents. I am in need of one child in each of the following age groups: 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-11, and 12-15. All I am going to do is ask the child to do a few different dance steps and I will video record her doing so. If you wouldn’t mind me using your daughter in my study  please let me know! Contact me through e-mail or phone 801.400.5010. This will be happening Wednesday November 16 from 5:30-6. Thanks!
